I like it because they have an overnight shelter. 4 dollars but it's worth it. Meaning have to leave out daily. But 1st come 1st serve. Now getting a job and moving forward is the next step.

In my experience it was a good program, I will come back and update but that may take up to a month! I will make some phone calls and perhaps travel there to learn more!

The HUM was there for me when I truly had nowhere else to go, and for that I thank GOD. They run a tight schedule between all the meals, classes, groups and meetings, etc. It is highly structured regarding routine, and I think most of its clients need help with time management, so that's a good thing. Much of the staff are in recovery themselves. Most of them haven't forgotten where they came from and are kind, and treat clients as equals. Then there are some staff members who don't seem as if they want to be there, and abuse their authority by treating the clients as inferiors, forgetting how sensitive people are who are in recovery. I liked my job in the kitchen, it could be fun and gave me something to do. I would have stayed there if they allowed me to get a job. I still need to have an income to pay for things in my life. Nine months of "being still" is great if you're on SSI and high on maintenance meds. But I needed a faster paced program with a lot more freedoms. A staff member found me another program that is a better fit for me, where they encourage people to keep it moving in the right direction to reclaim your independence. I felt completely dependent at the HUM. They do charge $111 a month for rent and seize all your SNAP benefits, so don't be mistaken, the TDAP you're applying for will be applied to your cost of living. I wasn't about to be broke and stuck for 9 months to a year. The spiritual aspect of the program was much needed for me, and I especially appreciated the teachings by the chaplain. I'm grateful for everything from the HUM, all flaws in the program aside. It may have taken all my assistance and left me with nothing to leave with, but it saved me from sleeping on a sewer grate or park bench. I recommend it highly if you have private income and need help with recovery.
