Human Trafficking Prevention Month: Raising Awareness and Taking Action

Every January, we come together for Human Trafficking Prevention Month—a time to raise awareness about one of the most pressing human rights issues of our time. Human trafficking isn’t something that only happens in far-off places. In the United States, approximately 71% of trafficking victims are women and girls. For January, we’re highlighting Human Trafficking Prevention Month and the efforts of our partner, Safe House Project, in providing support to survivors and helping end this crisis.

The reality is staggering:

As a women’s health organization, we are deeply committed to advocating for women’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being everywhere. Part of that commitment is addressing the dangers and long-term impact of human trafficking and working alongside partners like Safehouse Project to provide hope and healing.

Ways to Prevent Human Trafficking

Human trafficking often thrives in secrecy, which is why awareness and education are critical first steps. Here are a few ways we can all help prevent trafficking:

Learn the Signs:

Trafficking victims often show signs of restricted movement, avoid eye contact, or have unexplained injuries. Learn to recognize the red flags, especially in your community.

Support Safe Resources for Survivors:

Many survivors of trafficking have nowhere to go, which increases the likelihood of being re-victimized. Supporting trauma-informed organizations that offer safe housing, counseling, and holistic care can break this cycle.

Educate and Empower Others:

Sharing knowledge with your family, friends, and local communities can be a powerful tool for prevention. Trafficking doesn’t discriminate—it impacts women of all ages, backgrounds, and socio-economic statuses.

By taking these steps, we can help dismantle the systems that perpetuate trafficking and empower survivors to regain control of their lives.

Safe House Project: A Partner in Healing

We’re honored to partner with Safe House Project, an organization that offers women impacted by trafficking a pathway to recovery. Safe House Project provides a safe and supportive environment where survivors can heal from their trauma and start fresh.

Their programs focus on:

  • Safe Housing: A secure place to stay is essential for women escaping exploitation.
  • Counseling Services: Trauma-informed therapy helps survivors process their experiences and rebuild confidence.
  • Empowerment Programs: Education, job training, and support groups give women the tools they need to thrive.

Without organizations like Safe House Project, far too many women would lack the care and stability necessary to break free from the cycle of trafficking.

Together, We Can Raise Awareness

Human trafficking is devastating, but there is hope. By raising awareness, supporting survivors, and partnering with organizations like Safe House Project, we can create a world where women are safe, empowered, and free to live healthy and fulfilling lives.

Let’s honor Human Trafficking Prevention Month by taking action—whether through educating yourself or sharing this blog to spread awareness.

Every woman deserves to feel safe and valued. Together, we can help make that a reality.
