reached out to the Women’s Resource Center at a time when I truly needed help. While I was on the phone, my husband was yelling and screaming in the background. The woman I spoke to asked me if he was still there, and when I said yes, she told me she could no longer speak to me until I was away from him. I was shocked. I thought the entire mission of a women’s resource center was to help women in abusive situations, not to turn them away when abuse was clearly happening. Instead of focusing on my safety, the staff member told me that her concern was for the safety of her staff. I had to physically leave my home before she would even continue speaking with me. What makes this even more concerning is that it appears my husband is very well connected within Cleveland County. Because of this, I am led to believe that the Women’s Resource Center may be one of the organizations that chooses who they will or won’t assist depending on who the abuser is. That experience made me feel abandoned at the exact moment I was most vulnerable. If an organization that exists to protect women can’t or won’t provide assistance when it’s needed most, then I don’t believe they are fulfilling their mission.

I stayed for one night in March of 2012. I was trying to get home to Indiana. You all said don't worry we never have tornadoes and I was in Indiana for a very short time and there was a tornado.
