Maggi Smith Hall rated 5 5 months ago Loving home now and in 1935. I grew up in that wonderful old home. I'm now 77. It was built in 1915 as one of three arts and craft 4 square bungalows scattered in the area and owned by one family. This magnificent structure is the only one left. After the first family moved away a bar and eatery went in prior to prohibition. When prohibition hit the liquor opportunity went underground and a speakeasy was born. A trap door was cut in the kitchen floor inside the pantry. When the revenuers crashed the party liquor and beer were tossed under the house via the trap door or across the fence in the woods. How do I know this? Because when my last family member died in January 1986 I had the heartbreaking experience of breaking down and removing years of accumulation. My parents Clayton and Peggy Smith and grandparents Charles and Judy Latimer Lehman bought the rundown structure in February 1935 and restored it. My brother Charles Smith and I grew up in paradise. Amazingly all those years and none of us knew the complete history until the sad day I was hauling relics to the road. An elderly man on a bike stopped and told me the rest of the story about my old house. I ran back to the house and crawled under it and syre enough I found broken liquor bottles. It was a prayer answered. In 1986 when I sold the house it was stipulated in the deed that the house could not be torn down and had to stay with the property. Smi-Leh was split into two parcels and the back portion waited for the move of my old house to be turned and shifted south. It made the evening news! It became a perfect end to a dream. Or should I say a meant to be answered prayer for women and children in need. God bless this old house, the memories and its future. Amen.
PS. The burning of the rocker was a tribute to my grandmother who loved it and used it at the house. It was broken and could not be fixed. Rather than take it to the side of the road I burned it in tribute to the best Babose in the world. The smoke rose to Heaven as I watched with tears in my eyes and sweet memories in my heart always to cherish. |
