I reached out to the church because I wanted my husband and I to volunteer with Tim Tebow’s Night to Shine this year and this church was the nearest one that was hosting in Houston.
I volunteered with NTS in East Texas years ago and it was a wonderful opportunity and missed doing it so we were initially was excited. The sign up process was easy and convenient. Upon arriving and walking through the doors, the staff wasn’t the friendliest. I understand technical issues happen, but the first impression wasn’t great. For the church to have hosted this event many times, you would have thought it would have been more organized and professional, which it wasn’t. There were people cutting in front of us to get our volunteer shirt. People were staring at my husband and I; he’s legally blind and I’m African American. We experience more hospitality in New York than here.
The training didn’t start on time (30 minutes late). The staff hosting the training was “I” heavy during the presentation. She claimed she has a great team of leads for the evening but they should have been the ones speaking to break up the conversation. It would have been productive if we would have broken up into our individual teams after the welcome presentation to make the most of our time.
We ended up walking out early during the video segments because I think it’s inappropriate playing “wild” secular music in a sanctuary. I also think it’s inappropriate having massage therapy sessions at event like this. I get the want for needing to be the best host of an event like this but to what extent do you draw the line.
Also, the new “people first” language was a little different because my husband (having a disability) was just as confused as I was. We were excited to volunteer at NTS but didn’t want to partner with this church to make that happen in 2026.
Wishing them a successful NTS. Hopefully, they take these into consideration for next year.

Been going to Houston NorthWest Church for 10+ years. You have to come and check it out. Very friendly and helpful place. Very open to all. Would highly recommend it to any and all. Thank you Houston NorthWest Church for everything. Truly feel the presence of God in the place.

This is a great place. The love of God and bringing love into the community is just amazing! The kids area is fabulous, our kids now age 4-11, love it here, and the youngest started in the baby room, the ladies running that room are so amazing and have been running that room for so long. The team overseeing the kids area are superb and always have the BEST hearts! The kids love learning about Jesus and the bible!
