I’m sharing this review from the point of view of a criminal defense attorney who has practiced law in Collin County for over 20 years and handled many, many domestic violence cases as both a prosecutor and even more as a defense attorney.
I can’t speak to the services provided to victim’s of domestic violence, but as far as the Batterer Intervention and Prevention Program, in my experience with clients who have attended it, it’s pretty good. Early on in my career a lot clients who had been ordered to attend said that it was basically a place to go get yelled at by a bunch of man-haters and just seemed like part of the punishment. There may have been some truth to that or there may not have been. In the past 10 years or so, I haven’t had one single client report anything but positive. Of course, most of them likely didn’t want to have to participate, but all have stated that it was professionally run and the therapists genuinely seemed to want to help everyone get to the root of what was causing the problems and develop strategies for avoiding conflicts. Many have reported that they learned a lot about themselves and their relationships. It often takes two to fight, and many reported that being able to recognize their wife’s or girlfriend’s manipulation made it so much easier to handle and would result in their thinking about what maybe they were doing that might be causing their counterpart to be sort of picking a fight. For the large majority of my firm Paul Key Law’s clients, at least 90%, for better or worse, I am able to avoid their having to attend BIPP by getting their charges dismissed. Sometimes, a client may voluntarily participate in BIPP in order to reach a dismissal of the case. It’s quite a commitment, but, again, I haven’t had a single one say anything but good things about the class offered at Hope’s Door.
