Today, 7.2.23, the entire message was Bible. It was very good. There was no "fresh touch" mysticism, no Calvinism, no infomercial, very few author quotes, no silly stories, and the pastor even cross-referenced the passage, which helps people learn more information on the topic. The pastor, Nick, is charming, humorous, and willing to address difficult issues; he is young, but if he studies and preaches the Bible, he could become a great pastor. Unfortunately the Gospel was not explained. (Sometimes it is.) Instead, the misleading "give your life to Jesus," was offered, a meaningless phrase. One needs to understand and believe the truth, that Jesus died on a cross for the sins of the world, was buried, and rose on the third day, and that this is a completed sacrifice for sins, for everyone who simply believes it.
Old review:
The least of this church's problems is the ear-splitting music, songs with impossible melodies, (thankfully there are few) and its self-congratulatory infommercials at the beginning of the service.
I thought this church believed in faith alone for salvation but I've visited for a while and they keep preaching that you're not saved if you don't show works. If your life doesn't change, or if you don't do certain things, you aren't saved, so really it's the works that matter, not what you believe. I don't know if they're Calvinist, or if they believe in sinless perfection, or if they're taking the fruit of a false prophet story out of context, or what. The Bible says that believing that Christ died for our sins is what saves us and it doesn't say you have to prove it by doing anything. Not in the old testament either; they just had to believe that the God of Israel is the true God. Fruit is of the Spirit and it comes from learning how to bear fruit- by studying the Bible. Lots of people get saved and never get any Bible teaching or never take their Christian life any further. That doesn't mean they're not saved by faith alone in Christ's sacrifice.
This church leads people away from the Bible when it tells them to seek an experience, get a "fresh" dose of the Spirit (??), the Spirit "falling" on people, something unknown to the church, like charismatics teach. The Bible tells us to study and know. This church is a mash-up of weird teachings. What a set-up to lose your faith when your preacher tells you that you're supposed to be getting some unique experience (whatever that means) from God and it doesn't happen, because what you're actually supposed to be doing is trusting the scripture. Or even worse, maybe you do imagine some kind of experience and now you're chasing that instead of studying God's word and believing that it has everything you need. On a positive note, they are trying to teach some biblical content and not simply run a pep rally like so many churches.
Update:
The last few weeks there was more Bible and fewer silly stories and endless examples. But these young pastors need to spend more time reading the Bible and less time reading popular books about it. Or how about reading the Baptist faith and message and remember what I thought we believed. |

Christopher Oglesbee rated 5 8 months ago I love this place. I was visiting NWA from Arizona and attended Vision Sunday at the Springdale Campus in September 2022 after watching a number of online sermons.
Pastor Nick always provides inspiring sermons and was nice enough to chat with me for a bit when I attended church in-person.
I look forward to attending Cross Church and serving the community whenever I have the opportunity to relocate to beautiful Northwest Arkansas. |
Rachel Aristeo rated 4 2 years ago Ryan is an awesome new pastor, and I love hearing Jim Crawford speak. Of course, everyone enjoys hearing Pastor Nick. Many amazing preachers. It’s an absolutely huge church. My husband enjoys Hispanic church group. I’m very grateful he feels welcome at his group with a wonderful leader, Miguel! Feeling welcome is very important at church. My husband and I also appreciate the diversity here. I used to attend a group for 20 year olds at the cross church in Fayetteville, and met a few of my best friends there. Things are a little slow regarding groups right now due to Covid, but it’s understandable and probably the same everywhere. |
