I came to this place at my lowest and left with bitter sweet solutions. While in the program I felt judged as there was no clear solution for me. I felt stereotyped by my ethnicity as I was not the typical black man they assumed me to be. My plight was of severe depression not addictions. This made me feel out of place in the program as I couldn't be helped with my real issues of suicide. The sincere empathy of one individual staff member saved my life and changed my outlook on people. Through this one person I found my community and the solution to my plight. However other staff members only sought to criticize this growth turning the efforts of this staff member bitter. It's hard enough for people of color to seek help especially men.
