Bexar County Family Justice Center

I’ve been trying to get assistance from the Family Justice Center for over a month and have had a very difficult time accessing support. I’ve gone in person and called multiple times. Each time, I’m told someone will follow up with me as soon as possible, but I have not received any return calls. For someone experiencing domestic violence, navigating safety, legal, and financial instability is already overwhelming. Repeatedly being told help is coming and then not receiving follow-up adds additional stress during a time when stability and clear support are critical. These services are incredibly important, and I truly hope improvements can be made to communication and follow-through so that people in crisis are able to access the help they’re reaching out for.

I think there’s a common misconception that the center is who has the final say on whether a PO is granted or not. The family justice center forwards everything to the DA and they determine whether there’s sufficient evidence to pursue a case on your behalf. Unfortunately, in my case, a PO was not granted. I was sexually assaulted and a victim of DV while holding a child. My mistake was never calling the cops on the spot when it happened and I knew there was a high chance of the PO not being granted due to there not being a new incident. However, the center was the best option in terms of me reporting and documenting and creating a paper trail on the perpetrator. I appreciate everyone who works here because everyone was extremely understanding and empathized with me and I’m honestly grateful a place like this exists with the people who are employed there. They’re the middle man and they send everything off to the DA but the center is in place as a safe space for everyone who needs their help. Thank you for existing.
