This organization, Bay Area Women Against Rape (BAWAR), has been a pioneering force in advocating for rape survivors since 1971. They have provided unyielding support to survivors, transformed how the criminal justice system responds to sexual assault, and inspired volunteers to serve as Rape Crisis Advocates. Their work has included running several counseling programs, sending rape survivors to prisons to talk to rapists about the long-lasting impact of their crimes, and advocating for expanded funding for rape crisis services statewide. Despite the organization's closure, the impact of their work in the movement for survivor justice and healing will continue long after their doors close.
