If you don't read any of my review, please read this: DO NOT GET A PREGNANCY TEST AT A "CRISIS PREGNANCY CENTER" IN A STATE LIKE MISSISSIPPI!! "Performing or attempting an abortion outside of these exceptions is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000." Y'all.. just HOW do you think the long arm of the law finds out that a woman had an abortion?? I have a dear friend who told me she was going to go to First Steps. Unfortunately she couldn't get out of "Starkvegas" at the time, much less the whole state of MS, and asked me to help her find a place where she could "discuss her options." Her boyfriend (now ex, thank God!) was physically hurting her, and being pregnant in a state with an abortion ban is a death sentence for an abused woman, as those of us with eyes and ears all know. I told her this place was not going to actually "discuss options" with her because abortion isn't legal in MS.. so.. what "options"?? But she was desperate for a compassionate ear and I did understand that. Her appointment went exactly as I'd expected, and I started trying to figure out how I was going to explain to my husband that I might be charged with a felony for saving my friend's LIFE. The home page of their website is very misleading. "Considering an abortion? Get EMPOWERED. Get EDUCATED." Abortion is not legal in Mississippi, as the scary "abortion" page mentions. There is no "education," and there is certainly no "empowerment" going on at a place that misleads and uses scare tactics on vulnerable pregnant women. The gall of continuing to use the word "options" on the First Steps website makes me physically ill. It is DELIBERATELY misleading. No, it's a flat-out LIE. This clinic is not prepared to help you "weigh your options." There are no options in Mississippi. You give birth, that's it. Oh! And does your friendly First Steps professional tell you that the maternal mortality rate in Mississippi is the second highest in the nation? Think about that. The pages on adoption and parenting don't say anything about the colossal risks involved with giving birth in Mississippi. How do the risks of childbirth in your wonderful state compare to the risks of abortion that you have plastered on the "abortion option" page? And it makes me wonder, if pro-forced-birth states are so resolute in their moral high ground, why do they have to lie and mislead to offer services? PLEASE look up the John Oliver video called "Crisis Pregnancy Centers." Then do yourself a favor and if you are a female human, get the hell out of a state with an abortion ban. If you're wondering what happened to my best friend, thank GOD she had a miscarriage. She was, of course, of two minds about it, but felt relief that she could escape a really bad situation with no strings attached. She was able to leave Mississippi and get to a state that's safer for women, with less obsession about what's in her uterus. We are in dangerous times, friends. Know that there is help out there if you need it. There will always be people like me who will risk our own freedom to help. It's that important. Stay safe.
