The SHARE Center is an absolute God-send for my daughter and her son. They have walked beside her now for almost 3 years. She earns diapers, wipes, baby food, clothes, toys, and baby paraphernalia by attending “classes”. The meetings are one on one with a client advocate. My daughter watches a short parenting video relative to what’s happening in her season of parenting followed by a brief discussion with the advocate. She finds the videos very helpful. They also offer library story time for mom and kids as well as group classes where she can connect with other moms in a similar situation. The staff is very positive, affirming, encouraging and non judgmental. My daughter earns extra “baby bucks” if she brings a support person. I usually go with her and love the videos. I wish I had had that information when my children were small. Coming to the weekly classes is top priority for my daughter. Any woman facing a crisis pregnancy ought to reach out to the SHARE Center for support.

The most awkward and cold experience I’ve ever had in prenatal care. I lost my first baby last year at 20 weeks and have been anxious to see my new baby. I texted the office and requested an ultrasound at 6 weeks and 1 day. I knew the most I may see would be a gestational sac, but I was very transparent about how far along I was and that I didn’t live anywhere near their office but would have no problem making the trip if I could see my baby sometime within the week. I was told that I could come that same day after work and I was instructed to drink at least 32oz of water for the ultrasound. My husband and I were so excited, even though we were very aware that the most we might see would be a gestational sac. I mostly wanted to ensure that my pregnancy was not tubal. When we got to the clinic, I told them I drank plenty of water and was ready, only for the nurse to tell me that no ultrasound would be performed that day as I was too early in my pregnancy. I told her that I drove a long way and was told that an ultrasound could be performed. The nurse looked at me like I was stupid and asked me why I’d schedule an ultrasound this early. I asked if she could at least check for a tubal pregnancy and she responded with, “well.. um.. yeah?” There was no compassion at all. Even after I told the nurse and the other woman at the front desk that my last baby was stillborn at 20 weeks, there was no emotion or care. They just nodded their heads and said, “okay.”
The nurse begrudgingly said, “I guess we can try an ultrasound but I need to brush my teeth first.” I was so confused! I didn’t know I was interrupting her personal grooming time. I was eventually led into the exam room (without my husband, they made him sit outside). The nurse was not able to find my gestational sac and blamed it on their equipment being very outdated. I’m not upset at all that the nurse couldn’t find anything, I’m upset that I was told one thing over the phone, but then told something totally different and treated like I didn’t belong there after I drove 45 minutes to get there. I completed digital intake forms and was VERY clear about how far along I was (based on my last menstrual cycle) several hours before I arrived. Instead of trying to figure out why their staff told me to come in for an ultrasound that day, I felt blamed and was treated like an enormous inconvenience for them. It was a startling experience and most certainly not a nice memory to have for my first prenatal experience with my new baby.
