Ceci Woolley rated 1 a month ago I started seeing Sonia a little over a year ago to help deal with my breakup/divorce. I don't have much to say about her as a therapist specifically... she just wasn't the right fit for me and I never really got the feeling that she cared much about me. But I understand that therapists have to be emotionally removed from their clients as part of the job, so I don't hold that against her, I just don't believe I should be able to perceive that removal.
However, my issue came about this past week, almost a year later. I had seen Sonia for probably around 7-8 sessions. A few months after my last session, her office contacted me to inform me that my insurance had denied their claims for the last 3 sessions (I'm not sure why they let so many go by before running my insurance). I was happy to look into the issue and found out that my referral had expired, so I contacted my PCP to send in a retroactive one. Once she had done that, I reached out not one, not two, but three separate times to make sure that my insurance had been accepted. I was met with no response each time. Therefore, I assumed the matter was resolved and if not, they would contact me shortly to inform me. This was back in February/March.
Last Thursday, Sonia reached out to me to let me know I still had an open balance to which I replied asking if she could run my insurance again, because I had sent in the referral and it should work now. She informed me that it still wasn't working and that payment was expected by Wednesday. At that point, I had to wait until Monday to contact my insurance company (my insurance is through Michigan, so they were closed for the weekend by then). I called them on Monday and the representative had my claim sent to appeals. I informed Sonia of this and told her that it may take a few days for the appeal to be processed. I got no response until this morning, when I woke up to an email saying my card had been charged.
Now I understand that, legally, she had every right to do this, as I'd signed agreeing that I was responsible for payment if my insurance fell through. However, I think anyone can see how, ethically, this is disgraceful. The fact that I made many attempts to contact them about the payment and they waited half a year to inform me while giving me 4 business days to correct it before charging my card without warning after I told her it was being fixed but currently out of my hands. And it is now on me (someone who currently barely scrapping by even before this charge) to deal with the consequences of her businesses' disorganization. If I had been informed that I still owed them money at the time that they reached out about my insurance originally, I would have easily had sufficient funds to deal with it. It's even more disappointing that a business that is supposed to practice empathy and help people would conduct itself this way. I would very much recommend avoiding her practice.
TL;DR - My insurance denied their claims for my last three sessions (which they informed me of months after the sessions happened), which I tried to resolve by having my doctor send in a retroactive referral. After that was sent in, I attempted to find out if my insurance had worked by reaching out to Sonia's office multiple times without receiving a single response. They have now reached out to me half a year later and given me less than 5 business days to resolve the issue and then charged my card even after I informed them that the claim had been sent to appeals but needed some time to process. Her businesses' disorganization now means that I will have to go without groceries until my next paycheck. I would not recommend going to a practice that so lacks empathy and professionalism. |
Felicity Hacker rated 5 3 months ago I loved this place! It was my rock during a hard time during the COVID-19 pandemic. I saw Stephanie here (she transferred elsewhere since). All of my emails and phone calls were returned, unlike what another reviewer stated. |
Sarah Sketcherson rated 5 6 months ago So thankful to have found Journey to Peace through a friend. I’ve had nothing but wonderful experiences working with the people here. Dr Nate and the office staff are fantastic! |
GG rated 1 9 months ago Beware! They never answer their phone. They gave me a call back and the front desk lady was not very friendly. She wouldn’t even offer me services when I said I didn’t have blue cross shield. Very disappointed as I am in need of a therapist since I am grieving my fathers death. She wanted to get off the call as soon as she could and would not hear me out. So much for a Catholic counseling office. |
