Whenever we have donated here, they have always been so grateful and appreciative. I think some of these not so good reviews posted hastily here have been made in regards to the thrift stores not the actual shelter and their programs. That’s a real shame and hurts a wonderful organization. Some may not have read the organizations vision and mission statements prior to making the uninformed reviews. Thank you HOS for everything you do. Teach a man to fish!!!! VISION: To reduce homelessness among women and children through creative strategies and community partnerships, resulting in lasting self-sufficiency. MISSON: To provide Hope, Opportunity, and Support that empowers women and children as they journey from homelessness to self-sufficiency.

This place is SO picky about what they will accept. i had a John M. Smithe loveseat (with recliners) which I was willing to donate. Was it perfect? No. Did we use it for many years? Yes. They refused to take it because it was worn and said it had a hole. Don't bother with this group. Had to schedule a long time out and then in the end, they wanted to come early to pick up the item, and after all that canceled because the item was not good enough.

Someone contacted this place out of concern for me, I’m a disabled homeless female. Well a guy calls me and asks me some questions to see what I qualify for. And he tells me his program only accepts disabled people who are “willing to work part-time.” Maybe he is under the impression that the government makes mistakes about who is disabled and not, and thinks we’re all fakers? The process of getting disability is incredibly difficult in general, and even people who deserve it are likely to get denied. The reason I was given disability is I am so unwell, I need to be laying down most of the day. I have to take heavy pharmaceuticals and constantly work on my health all day just for my condition to stay remotely stable. My cognition is very impaired, making it hard to navigate my way through the system or network with people to get help. I’m living in a car in this weak condition, immunocompromised & constantly at risk from covid because I have to always be in public. This policy of requiring disabled to work to receive help is damaging and cruel. They are struggling enough, and you are perpetuating the false, judgmental idea that people on disability are actually just lazy. Believe me, the government screens for that. Most people get denied the first time, have to be VERY messed up to get approved and often need to give up a lot of the money they should be spending on medical help to a lawyer instead just to get approval. But, in America, I’ve found if you do not have a kid you’re taking care of, or the ability to work, your life isn’t worth saving. I was having a better day before he called and reminded me that society is so callous and wishes I would just disappear from sight and die. -Please take care of your health, there are not good safety nets to catch you if you get sick. -If you want to help people, try to help struggling people you find out about directly. Government and programs out there are not actually helping us.
