Everytime I come to Gettysburg I stop and shop here. The place is clean and organized and the prices are low and you also get a senior citizen discount. The staff is very friendly. I also shop at their other 2 thrift shops!

While I’m grateful that organizations like Adams County Rescue Mission exist to help people in need, I was very disappointed with the experience I had. I brought someone who had recently overcome homelessness to pick out furniture and household items after being referred here for support. We were hopeful and appreciative of any help, especially knowing the items are generously donated by members of the community. However, the young woman with the long brown hair who works downstairs in the furniture area was extremely unfriendly and unwelcoming. From the moment we arrived, her attitude made the process uncomfortable. Despite having a voucher, I was told I couldn’t select certain items because they were “for paying customers,” even though all of the items were donated. I was followed around and made to feel like a burden rather than someone being helped. It felt like we were only allowed to choose from things they didn’t want or considered unusable. To deny people in need the basic dignity of choosing decent items from donated goods simply because they’re using a voucher is not only unfair it goes against the spirit of charity and compassion. Everyone deserves respect and kindness, especially when they’re at a low point in life. I hope the mission re-evaluates how they train staff to treat those they serve, because the current experience felt judgmental, discouraging, and not in line with the godly mission they claim to represent. I ended up leaving without furniture.

Used to be a pretty good thrift store to donate and find good buys. Here of late the pricing has been way out of line. Found a Stetson hat without a tag. The pricing person stated “how’d that get out here that’s a $300 hat”! She said that, if I wanted it “the price is $100” as if to say I wouldn’t be able to pay for it. I felt so embarrassed and just wanted to leave as fast as possible. What a shame
